Welcome to Siskins Class!

Our teacher is Miss Gerry, and we are supported brilliantly by Mrs Harvey every day.

Any of the teachers would be delighted to speak to you if you have any concerns, big or small.

This term…

In the 1st term of Spring, students will be engaging in a variety of exciting and enriching topics across different subjects. Here’s a snapshot of what they’ll be learning.

In English, Year 1 will be learning how to write clear and effective instructions. They will explore how instructions are used in everyday life, such as recipes, games, or how-to guides, and focus on writing their own step-by-step instructions.

In Maths, Year 1 will focus on building strong skills in addition and subtraction up to 20. Students will practice adding and subtracting numbers using different strategies such as number lines, counting on, and counting back.

In Science, Year 1 will be studying animals, including humans. Children will learn about the basic needs of animals and humans, such as food, water, and shelter, and explore the differences between various types of animals.

In Geography, Year 1 will embark on a journey to explore their local environment and the world around them. The focus will be on understanding where we live, including the features of our local area, the types of places in our community, and how we can navigate them.

In PSHE, Year 1 will focus on the theme of "Dreams and Goals." Students will explore the importance of setting goals, understanding how to work towards them, and celebrating achievements. They will discuss their personal dreams and what they would like to achieve, as well as learning about perseverance and the steps needed to reach their goals.

In Religious Education (RE), Year 1 will be studying Christianity with a focus on the theme of "Jesus as a Friend." Students will learn about the life and teachings of Jesus, exploring stories from the Bible where Jesus shows kindness, friendship, and love. This theme will help children understand the importance of friendship, compassion, and how we can be kind to others in our everyday lives.

During PE lessons, we will be following the ‘Real PE’ programme. This term the children will develop and apply their dynamic balance on a line and stance through focused skill development sessions, thematic stories and games.

In Design and Technology (DT), Year 1 will be exploring how food affects our senses. Students will learn to identify the sensory qualities of different foods by looking, smelling, tasting, and touching various ingredients. They will be introduced to basic culinary skills and techniques, such as chopping, mixing, and measuring, through practical activities. Children will also apply their skills to create simple dishes, evaluating the outcomes of their work and discussing what they enjoyed or could improve. This sensory exploration will not only enhance their understanding of food but also inspire creativity and problem-solving in the kitchen.
